INHERITANCE TAX

This tax is levied on the estates over £312,000 at a rate of 40%.  There is no lower rate, you go straight from 0% to 40%!! 

If you give assets away before you die to lower the value of your estate the Revenue will add back a percentage of that amount if you do not survive the gift by 7 years.  

The graded bands are: 

Years between gift and death                            % added back

     0-3                                           100%

     3-4                                             80%

     4-5                                             60%

     5-6                                             40%

     6-7                                             20%
